Caprica
I can say that Caprica, the series, has come out from under Battlestar Galactica's shadow and stands on it own as a Colonial series. I have really enjoyed every episode of the prequel.

A Stroll Home
WHO: James Chase and Jilleen Simmons
WHERE: Caprica City, Caprica
WHEN: Hours after the Charity Event
"Jim catch you next time," he shook the host's hand with a strong grip.
"Yo tak'car of Jill, ya hear," replied the overweight and balding media executive for one of the Colony's premium publishing companies. Jim's thick Lower Leonis accent was strong after a few drinks.
"You bet." James glided his hand on Jill's lower back as she said her good byes to Jim's wife, and then wrapped his arm around her waist, to urge her that it was time to leave. They shared a non-verbal system of communication as a married couple. The little pull of his hand on her waist, told her that he wanted to leave and he had enough of socializing tonight.
It had been a big adjustment for him after they been together for a while to keep up with her social networking. It was fun the first couple of years but the constant stream of small talk and being on his best behavior became too much for him. Special Forces training was easier than the politics involved in Jill's social network. It even strain their marriage until they were able to come to a compromise. He simply wanted some quiet time on his days off from work, and she always wanted to do an activity, but somehow they had found a middle ground.
Jilleen had spent nearly her entire life socializing. He did not. They were opposites in that regard.

New Direction
WHO: James Chase & Jilleen Simmons
WHERE: Their Townhouse, Caprica City
WHEN: Early Morning, the day after starting liberty.
James Chase watched as the dawn light appeared over Caprica City's skyline from his bedroom balcony of the townhouse that he shared with his wife, Jilleen Simmons. He sat alone at with a tall glass of orange juice on the balcony table as he listened to the chirping birds below in the trees of the city park.
This had been his morning routine when they both lived here full-time a couple of years ago. Back then he was working hard to get back into a Special Operations unit after nearly two years of rehabilitation to fully walk again, while his wife worked at the Colonial Ministry of Defense.
They never sold their townhouse in Athen's Park after they left for their new assignments on Aerilon, because Jilleen could afford to keep more than one home with her trust fund. Also because this home represented the strength of their marriage which had been in danger of dissolving before his ill-fated deployment to Sagittaron. Those had been very difficult years for both of them.
He sat there for a moment thinking back how difficult those years had been for his wife. Firstly she nearly lost him to a IED, and then she dropped everything to be by his side during his recovery, this included leaving a career in air operations. About a year later she lost her closest friend to an accident caused by a drunk driver, and not too long after that she lost her mother.

History: James comes from a family with a long tradition of service in law enforcement on the Colony of Picon. His father is a senior criminal investigator for Picon's Federal Police. His brother is a Colonial Law Enforcement Agent on Virgon. His sister is an assistant district attorney on Picon. Jame was the youngest in the family, and was expected to follow the family tradition. He attain his law degree, and past the BAR exam to practice law on Picon. Six months into his practice at a respected law firm, he quit and enlisted into the Colonial Forces. His family thought he would service in the Judge Advocate Corps, but instead he went to flight school, and became a raptor pilot.
A couple of years later he met a young Lieutenant (j.g) Jilleen Simmons who was a rookie fighter pilot. After nearly two years of dating they married. They were a typical military couple with spans of separation. They managed to be stationed together on Picon, Caprica, and Aerilon, but not within the same command structure. The relationship had a few difficult moments because duty demanded long periods of separations.
James became a Special Forces officer after a year's training at Special Warfare School on Picon. His first assigned SF unit was aboard the Pegasus, and one of the rare times that he was stationed aboard the same battlestar as his wife.
He did one ground tour on Sagittaron during one of many periods of unrest on this colony. He was wounded by a roadside bomb while on a night patrol. His wife followed him to Caprica, where he did nine months of difficult rehabilitation so he could walk again.
He later returned to an active Special Operations unit when they transferred to Aerilon together. He eventually took command of a SF Raptor Squadron aboard the Battlestar Avalon.
